MBK CENTRE (Mahboonkhron)
Take the BTS
Skytrain anywhere along Sukhumvit Road and stay on until
you reach Siam Square, hop out and walk to the other
side of the platform and take the next train one stop
(end of the Line). MBK is in front of you, an amazing 6
story building full of little shops that sell assorted
goods.

SHOPPING
is one of Bangkok’s major attractions. Favorable purchases include Thai
silks and cottons, modern traditional jewellery featuring precious gemstones
which include sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds, semi-precious stones
include opals, jades, topaz, turquoise and zircons. Other goods are
nielloware, pewter ware, bronze, ceramic, specially high fired celadon,
leather goods, wood carvings, paintings, custom tailored clothing and any of
the thousand and one items produced by skilled Thai artisans. Bangkok is one
of the most competitively priced cities in Asia. Friendly bargaining in most
stores and markets ensure favorable prices and service.
PHATPONG/SURIWONG/SILOM AREA
Major hotels include the Montian
and Dusit Thani, numerous shops and department stores selling jewelry,
gemstones, antiques, leather goods, men’s and women's clothing, handicrafts,
Thai silks and cottons, electrical and photographic goods. It is also
Bangkok’s major commercial and night life centre.
MALBESAK/SILOM/NEW ROAD AREA
Principal hotels include the
Shangrila, Oriental and Sheraton Royal Orchid. The area is a major gemstone
dealing and manufacturing area. Boutiques, art Galleries, department stores
and shopping arcades including the River City Complex, selling a wide range
of items which has a particular emphasis on antiques, tailored clothing and
contempory Thai and Asian paintings.
PHLOEN CHIT/PATBUMWAN AREA
Principal hotels include the Le
Meridien, the Hyatt Erawan, Arnoma, Imperial and Siam Intercontinental. The
area encompasses several department stores and shopping centers, such as the
World Trade Centre, Siam Square and Mahboonkrong. Almost everything the
shopper needs may be found within this area. Thailand’s principal duty-free
shopping outlet is located on the 7th floor of the World Trade Centre.
SUKHUMVIT AREA
Principal hotels include the
Landmark, Ambassador and Sheraton Grande, concentrated largely between Soi
Nana (Soi 3) and Soi Asoke (Soi 21), Several shops, shopping centres and
department stores offer abroad range of Thai and imported items. The Nana
Entertainment Complex on Soi 4 and Soi Cowboy on Soi 23 are 2 of Bangkok’s
major nightlife areas.
PRATUNAM/PETCHABUTRI ROAD AREA
Principal hotels include the
Amari Watergate and the Indra Regent. The area is best known for its
inexpensive ready made clothing which is sold partly in a street market,
where determined bargaining is required for the best prices.
BANGLAMPHU
The riverrine section of Bangkok
is favored by back-packers for its budget accommodation. The area offers
inexpensive items, especially ready made clothing, leather goods, footwear
and curios. Bargaining is recommended for getting the best prices.

PANTHIP PLAZA (New Phetchburi Road)
Skytrain to Ratchathewi, leave on the right side and go
to the main road and turn right, Panthip is about 1km or so on the right. If
you are one of the many who are into the world of computing, then this
centre is a place not to be missed. A 5 story modern building with market
style stalls & small, Medium and large shops, where you will find the
biggest collection of computers, software, and accessories. You can pick up
a top of the range computer system for apprx Bt 20,000. If you need software
of any description there are literally hundreds of stores and stalls that
carry all the top titles available, starting from about Bt 100. VCD titles
start at about Bt 100+ but older titles are available at lower prices. DVD
now about Bt 150 MP3
titles, one disc with apprx 10-15 albums are about Bt 100, but you can pick
up many titles in bins at the front of shops cheaper. There is also an
excellent place on the 2nd floor if you need to eat, mainly all Thai food,
you but vouchers from a kiosk which are exchangeable if you don’t use them
